Fly Fishing at Rock Creek

Several of our Scouts headed to Rock Creek to go fly fishing over the weekend while the OA members attended Conclave at Boxwell.   It was a great weekend of skills development and drying off after playing in the creek.  Doesn’t get any better than that!

Conclave at Boxwell

Troop 859 was well represented at the Order of the Arrow’s Southern Region 6 Conclave held at Boxwell Scout Reservation in Lebanon, Tennessee.  We joined the rest of Wehali Chapter members and Kawida Lodge members there and celebrated coming in 3rd Overall (out of 10 Lodges) in the Quest competitions and games.  Way to go, Kawida!

Three of our Kawida Lodge’s Arrowmen were awarded, and honored:   Aaron Shepherd, Section Secretary | Alex Hill, Section Vice Chief | Don Combs, Southern Region Chief, were all honored with custom-made gifts. Aaron Shepherd was also elected Section Secretary. When you see him, congratulate him!

Good job Kawida, and don’t forget to mark your calendars for Conclave 2011 at Camp Crooked Creek. April 8th-10th, 2011.

New Health Forms

The new BSA health form must be used for all troop, council and national Scouting events beginning in April.  It can be found on the scouting.org website where it can be filled in online:

Once the form is completed online and printed out, just take it to the doctor for his signature.  Doctors will sign an updated health form if the individual has had an examination that is less than one year old.

Interesting: A History of Camp McKee

Researched by Marti Buckner. Special thanks to Lucien Rice.

The history of McKee Scout Reservation is rich in diversity. Native Americans occupied east central Kentucky before the white people arrived. The Shawnee settlement of Eskippakithiki was less than 5 miles from the present day McKee. Grape Knob would have offered a good observation point from which Daniel Boone or a Shawnee could view the surrounding land. The courthouse in Mt. Sterling was built with stone that was mined from Grape Knob when it served as a rock quarry. McKee has a special sense of place.

Governor's Luncheon

This says it all.....

Governor’s Luncheon, March 17th at Keeneland was a huge success with Troop 859 serving as the Honor Color Guard for the luncheon with Governor Steve Beshear.

Skills Weekend

Skills Weekend at Camp McKee was a great weekend.

Here are a few shots of the Scouts after they hiked to the top of Grape Knob; climbed up one of the Adirondack Shelter, cooked breakfast in camp and tried their hand at Geocaching.
